Parivartna Yoga

1) Maha Yogas: These are excellent combinations to have in a chart. In this type of yoga, both the houses involved are auspicious houses. Both the planets in this yoga will complement each other and enhance the significations of the house.
Maha Yoga forms when the lords of 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses mutually exchange with each other. The houses involved are trikona or trine (1st, 5th and 9th) houses, Kendra houses (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses) and two auspicious houses related to wealth (2nd and 11th houses). There can be total of 28 combinations possible in Maha yoga.
Maha yoga produces fantastic results to the native. If the planets involved are natural benefics, then the result will be more powerful and helps in complete accomplishment of the goals for the native. If malefic planets are involved with this yoga, then also good results are produced but not to the extent of benefic planets.
The person with Maha yoga will achieve wealth and prosperity, is very fortunate, will achieve his goals, all the significations of the respective house will be fulfilled.
2) Dainya Yogas: These are not a good combinations to have in a chart. Dainya yoga results in the involvement of dusthana houses (or evil houses). Dusthana houses in vedic astrology are 6th, 8th and 12th houses. When lords of dusthana houses exchange their houses with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th houses and also with other dusthana lords, then Dainya yoga is formed. These lords may spoil the house significations.
There can be 30 different combinations possible in Dainya yogas. The results can be attributed based on the position and strength of the planets. Again we can differentiate two types of Dainya yoga. One, when dusthana (Trika) house lords are exchanging with non-dusthana houses and other, dusthana house lords exchanging with other dusthana lords The later will be termed as Vipareeta Raja yoga. The results of the Vipareeta raja yoga are somewhat different. Vipareeta rajayoga produces good results with initial struggle or the native will gain at the expense of others.
Click the link to know more on VIpareeta Raja Yoga
The person both with Dainya yoga will face lot of struggles in life, they will have wicked nature, they lack intelligence, enemies will harm them or others will use them for their own interest, will have unsteady mind which leads to trouble, will indulge in sinful activities.
3) Khala Yogas: Khala yoga can be placed between Maha yoga and Dainya yoga as regards to the results. Khala yoga is formed with the involvement of third house. Third house is termed as mild malefic house. It is not as bad as dusthana houses 6th, 8th and 12th houses. So when exchange takes place between 3rd house lord and other houses lords except dusthana house lords, Khala yoga is produced. Therefore 3rd house exchanges with 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th or 11th lords. There can be 8 different combinations possible in Khala yogas. .
The person with Khala yoga will be fickle minded, there can be lot of fluctuations in any ventures, he will have to struggle a lot. This yoga is not completely negative. The yoga produces both good and bad results. As the 3rd house denotes hard work and self effort, if the native works hard towards goal, he tends to get rewarded. If there is an aspect of benefic planet, it will produce excellent results.
Nakshatra Parivartana
This is another kind of Parivartana in Vedic astrology. When a planet is placed in certain nakshatra (or star or constellation), the planet will get influenced by the nakshatra and the lord. When two planets exchange their lordship of the nakshatras, Nakshatra parivartan occurs. For example, Sun is placed in Gemini sign in Punarvasu Nakshatra. Jupiter is the lord for Punarvasu nakshatra. Whereas Jupiter is sitting in Virgo (Kanya) in Uttara Phalguni nakshatra whose lord is Sun. Here there is no connection between Sun and Jupiter in other ways. Both the planets will have positive impact on the native. It is said that Nakshatras represents our subconscious mind and will reveal our fruits of past karma as well.
The effects will be more visible on subconscious level. Since dasa is calculated based on nakshatra position of the Moon, the effects will be more visible during dasa and antardasa periods of respective planets. The result will depend on the characteristics of the Nakshatra as well.

Yogas formed by Moon

Yogas formed by Moon

Sunafa yoga

When a planet (except Rahu, Ketu and Sun) occupies the second house from where Moon is positioned without any affliction, it forms a Sunafa Yoga. Note that Moon should also be placed positively in the D-9, Navamsha chart. Such a native is quite skilled and good with communication. Their voice is persuasive and positive. These people earn wealth through hard work. They are good motivators and lead a happy life with family. Gajkesari yoga

When Jupiter is placed in Kendra, i.e., 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th house from Moon without affliction, the placement forms Gajkesari yoga. This Yoga bears positive results when planets are in powerful degrees and without any malefic influence (debilitated, retrograde, aspected by malefic planet, conjunct enemy planet). Note that Jupiter should also be free from affliction in D-9, Navamsha chart. If the planet is strongly posited, the native is likely to be very intelligent, wealthy, healthy, and sharp minded.  Such a native would enjoy all the luxuries life has to offer, such as vehicle, a good business, knowledge, fame, good education and victory over opponents. This Yoga is almost synonymous with power, which is why the name of the yoga is Gajkesari. Gaj means elephant and Keseri means lion, both are powerful animals.

Adhi yoga

When Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, three of the most benefic planets are placed in three, two or any one of the 6th, 7th and 8th houses from Moon, the placement is called Adhi Yoga. Natives with this placement of planets tend to be strong, wealthy, go-getters, successful, and hard working. They do well in business and put their best foot forward. They are very confident and have a strong will power.

Gauri Yoga

When unafflicted Moon is placed in Taurus or Cancer sign or occupies a trine house from Ascendant along with having aspect of Jupiter, it forms Gauri Yoga. Such natives are very attractive and beautiful. Their parents are very supportive. These native tend to be wealthy and enjoy a peaceful life with friends and family. They also get to marry a partner of their choice.

Chandra Mangala yoga

When Mars is conjunct Moon in a house, it forms Chandra Mangala yoga. This is a good placement concerning one’s finance and income. Native enjoys a food financial status and earns a lot of respect and name in society. However, this position is not as good for relationship with mother and relatives. Female natives encounter hurdle in married life and sometimes experience delay in marriage too. This Yoga also gives restlessness and fickle-mindedness.

Amala yoga

When benefic planet or planets occupy the 10th house from Moon and 10th house is also unafflicted, it forms Amala Yoga. This is an opportune combination. Native enjoys an authoritative position in life. Such a person is wealthy, prosperous, famous, and experiences  lot of growth in career and social life.

Saturn one way on Moon

Manas meets Maya
It is very deep at DNA level

  • Primal pattern around nurture
    • nurture issues, self sacrificing person

Saturn one way on Sun

If you know what Sani is doing in the chart, that's all you need to know. A little bit of Arthwada.

All is well that bend well. Saturn a big blue resistance is futile. The mighty slow walker will exert an unmistabale influence.

One way aspect of Saturn is powerful

One way aspect to Sun:

What does tradition tells us:

1) Father & son
2) From Chayya and not a real wife
3) Dark and hairy and needed to live upto father's expectations, who is so brilliant
working with a person of authority
Sun also represent our sense of freedom

The self in a box

(Saturn brings in boundary and structure)

  • Issues around the self relating to others and getting in one's own way
  • Issues around maintaining continuity with respect to project and relationships etc.
  • Issues around authority figure - especially male (not exclusively) who are authority figures (parent, government, boss). Live upto issue
  • Issues around reconciling 'ambitions' and security, winds up frustrated and resigned

Obesity Remedy

Any time someone is eating too much cheese, ice cream or consuming too much dairy (milk/yogurt), then we have the classic Mom/Breast Milk/lack of nurturing symbol set up and they are going through the motions.  There’s a lot of fat calories to ice cream and cheese, too. Check out a person’s diet with great care if they are coming to you for medical support and help.   A person’s diet tells me so much and it’s easy to see it in the natal chart as well if you know what you’re looking for and what planet or luminary rules the food or fluid they are consuming.

Cheese is a Moon-ruled food.  Cancer sun sign and those with a Moon with three or more hard aspects may eat too much and cause weight gain.  A little goes a long way.
The Moon rules over the mineral potassium and the vitamin, B-2 (Riboflavin).  In the metabolism, we have many chemical exchanges and balances. One is the sodium (salt) and postassium balance.   Too much salt, and the cells in our body absorb more and more water.  The more salt we consume, the more engorged the cells become with water.  Water means more wieght put on the person as a result.  Potassium is there to force the excessive water OUT of the cells.  Between the two mineral functions, our cells don’t get too much or too little water in them.  There is a balance.
People who have “water weight” are easy to pick out.  All you have to do is ask them to hold up their arm.  As you gently press your fingers on the top of their lower arm, you’ll feel the water beneath the skin.  It feels like soft, moveable jelly beneath the skin.  And it usually collects first, in a person’s feet and ankles.  Later, in their hands and fingers.  And then, the whole body begins to hold the extra water.  If they come with these symptoms, then suspect water weight issues.

Our ocean contains salt or sodium.  And our emotions are symbolized by water.  This combination can create “water weight” gain.
Salt (sodium) is ruled by Mars.  When a person is a salt eater their Mars will have more hard aspects than soft ones.  And if there is a hard aspect between Moon and Mars, then the sodium – salt balance. will be affected. As a result of this, the person will have a ‘salt’ craving.  And this can come from either high or low cortisol level in the individual.  Mars rules the Adrenal glands and the hormones it dispenses into our bloodstream.  Cortisol, one of the hormones, if high or low (outside normal bounds of functioning in a human being), will increase a person’s salt hunger/craving.  This is a huge red flag and should be tested out.  When cortisol is within normal bounds, the salt craving/hunger goes away.  (Please go to: http://medicalastrologybyeileennauman.blogspot.com, November 2009 archives for these three important blogs for in depth information on high cortisol).
Vitamin B-2 has a part to play in this as well.  Without enough of this important vitamin, high blood pressure may be the result.  There is a synchronistic partnership between B-2 and Potassium.  B-2 is also, in a secondary way, instrumental in lowering sodium in the body.  Check out your B-2 deficiency symtpoms in my book, MEDICAL ASTROLOGY.  They are all there.  If you have these deficiency symtpoms, then this may be the reason for high sodium in your body (and high blood pressure and possibly water weight issues).  B-2  also plays a secondary part in the health of our Adrenal glands, too.  Without enough B-2, the adrenals grow sluggish.  And then we can’t handle stress as well.  It also is going to affect your cortisol level.
Eating too much salt increases blood pressure and over time, high blood pressure is the result.  Also, especially in women, who have their sodium high and potassium levels low, they get what I call “water weight.”  Water weight is simply a situation where too much sodium is in the body and not enough potassium.  The cells of the body are engorged with water.  We even have ‘fat cells’ at this point!   This kind of weight increase can mean a hundred pounds or more over time.  I once had a secretary who had water weight issues.  I suggested she take raw apple cider vinegar.  It is high in potassium and is a natural counter-balance for high sodium in a person’s body.

Apple cider vinegar

You can take one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in 4-8 ounces of warm or cool water, stir it up (and you can add honey if you don’t like the sour taste) and drink it two to three times a day.  She did this and lost one-hundred and fifty pounds of weight.  And she did it in six months with the monitoring of her doctor!  It was an amazing transformation.  I would caution you to be in touch with your health practioner about this because you can continue to take too much vinegar, i.e., natural potassium, and cause other problems.  Let them monitor you for best results.  (A common blood test will also show your sodium-potassium balance and should be undertaken before you start a course of apple cider vinegar).  Tests are a medical astrologer’s best friend because it proves out what is in the person’s chart, but also engages the health professional who can be the eyes and ears for your client.
Go to the health food store and find “raw” apple cider vinegar.  It should not be clear.  Instead, it will have some cloudiness to it.
Of course, some take potassium tablets you can get from any health food store, but many people have digestive problems with them.  I recommend the apple cider vinegar route unless someone absolutely hates the idea of consuming vinegar-water-honey combo.  You can also look at the foods you eat.  But if you’re over weight, you don’t need a lot of banannas which are high in fat and potassium.  That’s counter intuitive.
And homeopathically, there is a remedy made of vinegar, but this route should be overseen by a professional homeopath.

Obesity and planets

Let’s delve a little deeper into WHY a person would crave sugar in the first place.  On a psychological level, Sugar symbolizes the sweetness in our life–or the lack of it.  Venus, the ruler of sugar, symbolizes our ability to be loved and to love others.  People who are denied love, particularly in the first eighteen years of their life, often turn to sweet foods to compensate for what they never received from their parents.  In my experience, they also have a tendency to go toward hyperinsulism.  Psychologically, we hunt for the missing love in our food.  The consumed sweets and carbohydrates like bread and pasta and desserts compensate for the love we never received enough of.

Our heart is about the emotion of love.  Love, if denied or not given in the right quantities to a child will set them up for a life-time of seeking love on an unconscious level.  One of the disasters is targeting “comfort food” as a way to say, “I love myself.”  Unfortunately, food for someone who is hyperinsulism oriented, converts all sugar and carbohydrates directly into fat cells. And then, the weight gain begins.  These people have to be made aware of their compulsion to consume sweets and carboyhydrates like bread and pasta could be tied to a deeper emotional need.

When we understand WHAT is underlying our craving for a certain group of foods, this can help us get a handle on it and control it.  And control what does into our mouth.  We need to love ourselves enough to do this regardless of how unloved we were during the childhood years.  We cannot be victims.   We must be pro-active and love ourselves enough to halt the weight gain.

Love denied.  Love starved.  Bittersweet.  Bitterness.  Love yearned for and never fulfilled.  All these different expressions and levels of love that are not bestowed upon the baby/child, set him or her up for sweet cravings. Or, as an adult when loss of a loved one will put them on this path, as well.  When carbohydrate consumption gets out of hand, weight gain is the result.  Obesity is the end of the road for this person.  Being unloved creates the psychological and emotional foundation for this type of over weight phenomena.
There is no question that low self-esteem breeds obesity.  The problems start at home and if not checked, understood or changed, then ‘comfort’ food becomes a primary way to assauge one feeling bad about themselves.
In my experience, these are the major reasons for fat and obesity in my clients.  Yes, genetics can and does play into this.  However, with proper education and knowledge, what you eat and how much you eat, can be understood and changed.   As an adult, we are responsible for what we put into our mouths.  We can change our relationship with food once we understand the foundation of how we got here from there.  If we are a child, we have no choice but to look to our parents and we hope they are knowledgeable about good foods vs. junk food/high sugar products, ect.

Children sense being abandoned.  I realize that most parents would take issue with this, but looking at it from the baby’s standpoint it IS being abandoned.  Both parents are leaving it with strangers. And it is how the baby/child sees this that counts because that’s where the wounding–being abandoned–gets started and the foundation for obesity is laid.

With abandonment comes a whole host of other feelings for the baby/child.  There is a sense of no protection, of not being safe and perhaps, even being threatened.  The center of abandonment is loss of security.  Over and over again I’ve seen this scenario play out and adults who are obese who will tell me this familiar tale of being abandoned–although they may not use that word–usually, that they were “left alone,” or “day care,” explanations are used, instead.

It’s a very common symptom in children and adults nowadays.  When you see obesity, there’s probably a strong chance that this person feels unsafe, threatened and unprotected in our world.

But ground zero is emotional wounding as one of the major components that sets a child off balance and the body responds to the wounding by packing on layers of fat, much like armor worn by a knight in the days of Yore, to protect themselves.  Only, the knight, after the battle, could shed his armor.  The children (and adults) of today WEAR their armor and until they feel safe and protected–it isn’t coming off.

I would strongly suggest everyone read my three blogs on PTSD and high cortisol — http://medicalastrologybyeileennauman.blogspot.com — which were published in November 2009 (just go to November ARCHIVES).  When a child doesn’t feel safe and is in a threatening environment parentally speaking, her or his cortisol goes sky high. And will remain there if there is serious, ongoing dysfunction in the family environment.  This child grows up to an adult and will have weight issues all her or his life until–and if–they get help.  That help for high cortisol is outlined in these three blogs–so please check it out.

Moon

The Moon symbolizes our mother.  There is a statistic out that if the parents are obese, the children will become obese, too.  Mom and children are interconnected and cannot be separated.  And if Mom is falling short in ways that it wounds her baby/young child, she may or may not know that.  Little babies can’t talk and young children simply don’t understand how they feel.  But feel they do.  And the Moon is about IMPRINTATION and CYCLES and BEHAVIOR and REPETITIVENESS of emotional patterns.  It boils down to being nurtured or not.  Children who are emotionally neglected or deprived for a million reasons, are not nurtured.  Mom equals breast milk, the food of life, the bond between mother and child and of being nurtured and feeling safe and secure in her arms.  We have billions of children who grow up without proper nuturing and in one way, it can be expressed via weight gain and obesity.

The next time you see an overweight woman, wonder if she had a dysfunctional childhood.  The body retains memory of it.   Most people wear their wounding on the inside of them.   In this case, it is worn externally for all to see.  That should make us more compassionate toward that individual.

Women aren’t the only ones impacted by childhood dysfunction.  Men are just as vulnerable.   The next time you see a man who is over weight, ask yourself:  I wonder if he had a tough childhood?  If you can picture that man as a little boy, compassion may flow instead of feeling disgust or prejudice because of the weight he carries.

Consider the Moon like the ceaseless ebb and flow of the ocean tide.  Water symbolically represents our emotions.  Whatever we experience in the first eighteen years of our life, we get imprinted with it.  And unfortunately, we tend to imprint the trauma far better and for far longer than any good experiences that ever happened to us.  I don’t feel it’s at all unusual that we would remember our emotional woundings and trauma longer than the good things we experienced in our life.  It is through our wounding that we learn. That’s just how it is on this planet.  Our karma is of our own making and walking through it to learn is what it’s all about ‘down here.’

Dysfunctional parents equals a child with hard aspects to his or her Moon.  The Moon imprints all emotional behavior whether supportive or detrimental to us.  It is about the cycles of our life.  Parental behavior imprints us.  The Moon and hard aspects to it is the second reason for potential weight gain and obsesity.  When we’re feeling attacked on any level, some people unconsciously use fat as a barrier and shield to protect themselves from the slings and arrows of life.  When a person is fat/obese, there should be intervention therapy that goes right along with a new diet.  They must know what is trip-levering this situation.  By making them responsible, it can often underwrite and support their reasons to lose the weight.

We are all creatures of “habit.” And the Moon symbolizes our behaviors, good and bad.  The Moon is a major key to fat and obesity issues.  I am always distressed by the traditional medical model who merrily goes its way creating lap band surgery and other ways to decrease weight, when in reality, therapy must be a part of getting healthy once again.  Fortunately, homeopathy, a wonderful alternative medicine, enfolds a person’s psyche, behavior patterns and emotions.

Mars/Venus:

If the person has Mars in hard aspect with Venus (e.g., AK), then there’s the possibility of having high cortisol being thrown out into our bloodstream by our Adrenal glands.  High or low cortisol creates intense cravings.  Some people will crave salt.  Others will  crave sweets.  Some will crave recreational drugs or alcohol.  When the stress hits, however, then the ‘comfort foods’ for the Venus-driven person is going to be SUGAR related.  Sugar addiction is not uncommon in this position.

Jupiter

If you get Jupiter on the MC  (e.g.AK) or Ascendant (e.g.,AN), then the largess factor arrives big time (pardon the pun!)  Providing the aspects are there, this individual can over eat. They like the food and they gorge.  Jupiter people don’t have any brakes to apply to their eating behavior.  Not unless Saturn (the brakes) is there in a sextile aspect (e.g., AN), or Saturn is well aspected as a whole in the person’s chart.
Jupiter can do everything in excess.  They don’t know when to say “stop” or “no” to the food they’re eating.  They tend to be gourmands as well, so this doesn’t help matter any.  And they like fatty meat, desserts and buttery recipes/sauces.  Sweets, desserts and sauces are their pyramid food groups. All, if eaten too often and in too large a serving, will eventually put on the weight gain.
Jupiter trine another planet, especially sun, moon or venus, can cause weight gain (e.g., AN).  People who have trines have a tendency not to exercise very much unless that have too.  We call a trine “lazy” and it can be.  The person can become lazy and indolent.  Of course, other aspects can change this potential.

By definition, an unaspected planet (JP in AK) is one that has no major aspects to it: conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition.  In other words: it sits out there and operates on its own just as it pleases.  And sometimes to the detriment in health issues.  It is a rebel and has no responsibility to the other planets because the aspects aren’t there to modify or support its behavior one way or another.

Please see my three-part series:  PTSD/high cortisol in 2009 on my blog for in-depth and detail explanation of this statement (check the archives from 11.28.2009 through 12.1.2009 for these blogs):  http://medicalastrologybyeileennauman.blogspot.com.

Dusthana Houses and The Value of Adversity

Dusthana Houses and The Value of Adversity

As mystics have said for thousands of years, we need to bless our enemies and the adversities that life sends us, as they are our greatest teachers. We are often awakened, chastened, and made both humble and compassionate by the difficult episodes we undergo.

"It is easy to fall asleep floating in a swimming pool lulled by perfect weather, but one tends to wake up after running into a brick wall."

We also can clear the incomplete events of the past by recognizing that our reactions to the trials of the moment are the re-activations of past unfinished traumas that need to be felt through, forgiven, and released.

Note: These include karmic patterns that need to recur in this life to be addressed.

Astrologically, the houses that have gotten a "bad name" are the keys to transforming our lives and our consciousness. The events represented by these houses shock us into awareness. They represent, in Gurjieffian terms, the shock points in our lives. These are opportunities not only to "wake up", but to jump more permanently to new levels of consciousness.

Vedic astrology recognizes the Dusthana houses -- 6, 8, and 12 -- not only as representing suffering, but as helping us -- through our journey in their realms -- to cultivate spiritual detachment, achieve release from the Earth plane, and reach enlightenment.

In other words: "What is bad for life on Earth is good for the return to Heaven."

Yet these same areas of life afford us, indeed confront us, with the necessity to:

1. Face ourselves, our complacencies, blind spots, indolence, narrowness.

2. To recognize where we are over-attached to and over-valuing the impermanent and the material.

3. To embrace change, and see & learn from the teachings that come to us through loss and suffering.

4. To align to the Spirit, the Eternal, and the essential aspects of our own beingness.

5. To recognize the Unity of all life, and develop abiding compassion for all suffering in the Universe.

6. And to learn how to take pain and all adversity in stride, and as -- ironically -- a path to healing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Postscript

Each of these houses also denotes many positive themes:

The Sixth House represents the ability to create a working schedule, to establish routines, to attend to coworkers and the work environment, to serve others in the health field, to coach and motivate people, to establish new procedures, and more.

E.g. Many doctors have strong planets in the sixth house.

The Eighth House indicates the capacity for intimacy and deep communication, the motivation and ability to work on oneself and to help transform others, mastery of esoteric gifts (e.g., psychic and healing abilities, advanced understanding of herbalism and acupuncture, etc.), investigative and research skills, and much more.

The Twelfth House signifies the ability to transcend material existence, "pleasures of the bed" (sleep and sex), devotion to helping those in need, capacity to work with foreigners (and settle in a foreign land), and philanthropic and charitable inclinations.
