Panchang Shuddhi

Chandrabalam
From your natal moon, ie Rasi, if the moon is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th sign then it is bad and on that day your chandra balam is bad or no chandrabalam. All other places moon has chandrabaam. 8th is the worst.
Tarabalam Tarabalam – Strength of Constellation. – The constellation ruling at the time of birth is one’s Janmanakshatra or birth star and the zodiacal sign in which the Moon is situated at the time of one’s birth is one’s Janma Rasi or Birth Moon. These are highly important. Count from the birth constellation to the one ruling on the particular day on which a new work is to be done or a journey undertaken and divide the number by 9 if divisible. Otherwise keep it as it is. If the remainder is 1 (janma) it indicates danger to body; if 2 (sampat) wealth and prosperity; if 3 (vipat) dangers, losses and accidents; if 4 (kshema) prosperity; if 5 (pratyak) obstacles; if 6 (sadhana) realisation of ambitions; if 7 (naidhana) dangers; if 8 (mitra) good; and if 9 (parama mitra) very favourable.
1.    Janma Tara: Causes  Worry
2.    Sampat Tara : Gain of wealth
3.    Vipat Tara : Disputes
4.    Kshema Tara: Gains in Business etc
5.    Pratyak Tara : Harm to the work
6.    Sadhana Tara : Happiness
7.    Naidhana Tara : Monetary Loss
8.    Mitra  Tara : Good happiness
9.    Parama Mitra Tara: Very good happiness
Tarabalam details bellow for your information only.
To calculate tarabalam one must calculate position of daily nakshatra from your Janma nakshatra (both nakshatra inclusive). Divide that by 9. If the reminder is 2,4,6,8,9 or 0 then it’s good otherwise it’s bad, ie, 3,5,7 to be avoided.
1.Janma (Birth) Tara – The Janma (birth star) Nakshatra, the 10th from Janma nakshatra also known as Karna nakshatra and the 19th from Janma nakshatra known as Adhana nakshatra constitute this Tara.
2.Sampat Tara – The 2nd the 11th and the 20th Nakshatras counted from Janma nakshatra constitute this Tara.
3.Vipat Tara – The 3rd, the 12th and the 21st stars counted from Janma nakshatra constitute this Tara.
4.Kshema Tara – The 4th, the 13th and the 22nd Nakshatras counted from the janama nakshatra constitute this Tara.
5.Pratyak Tara – The 5t, the 14th, and the 23rd nakshatras from Janma nakshatra constitutes this Tara.
6.Sadhaka Tara – The 6th, the 15th, and the 24th nakshatras from Janma nakshatra constitutes this tara.
7.Nidhana Tara – The 7th, the 16th, and the 25th nakshatras from the Janma nakshatra constitutes this tara.
8.Mitra Tara – The 8th, the 17th and the 26th nakshatras from Janma nakshatra constitute this tara.
9.Ati or Parama Mitra Tara – The 9th, the 18th and the 27th nakshatras from Janma nakshatra constitutes this tara.
It is better to avoid Vipat and Naidhana stars for all important undertakings – long journeys, marriage, starting of an enterprise, etc., even if such a star happens to fall in the 3rd-cycle, unless there are other counteracting factors.
When choice is limited – if the day is otherwise favourable, only the negative parts of these unfavourable constellations may be avoided. Thus, in the Janma, Vipat, Pratyak and Naidhana constellations, the first 7, 3, 8 and 6 ghatis respectively may be  avoided. The Rishis go to the extent of saying that even if unfavourable combinations are present – the ruling constellation and the position of the Moon are all adverse, Pushya has the power of neutralising these evil forces and asserting its benefic nature. BUT Pushya, it is inauspicious for purposes of marriage.

Panchanga Suddhi. – We have already said that a Panchanga consists of tithi, vara, nakshatra. yoga and karana. All these must be auspicious.

In regard to lunar days, the 4th, 6th, 8th, 12th and 14th, full and new moon days should be avoided.

In regard to vara, Thursday and Friday are held to be suitable for all works. Tuesday, is to be generally avoided except when it happens to be the 10th, 12th or 16th day of the child’s birth when the child’s Namakarana (baptising or giving name) may be performed.

Of the several Nakshatras, Bharani and Krittika should be avoided for all auspicious works as these two are said to be presided over by the god of death (Yama) and the god of fire (Agni) respectively.

In urgent cases if the Lagna could be fortified, the dosha due to nakshatra may get neutralised.

The last parts of Aslesha, Jyeshta and Revati should also be avoided.

Coming to the Yoga (vide page 12) the 6th (Atiganda). 9th (Soola). 10th (Ganda), 17th (Vyatipata) and 27th (Vydhruti) have deleterious effects upon events which are started or commenced under them. – The

Karana chosen must be appropriate to the election in view. Thus Bava is auspicious for starting works of permanent importance while Thaithula is propitious for marriage. Bhadra is unfit for any good work but is eminently suitable for violent and cruel deeds. For getting initiation into kshudra mantras Sakuni Havana is propitious

How to determine Ista devata

Ishta Devta literally means ‘Deity to be worshiped’. Ishta Devta is responsible for opening the passage of renunciation for the native. Soul is immortal, and it travels this mortal world many times, in different physical bodies, to get rid of karmic cycles and attain Moksha.
Ishta Devta helps us attaining Moksha and coming out of endless cycle of life and death. Worship of Ishta Devta not only ensures that whole life of a person is well guided, protected and taken care of, but also makes it certain that one is moving towards the path of final liberation. It is possible to know one’s Ishta Devta by studying the native’s birth chart.
There are different deities assigned to different planets or planetary combinations.
Method of knowing one’s Ishta Devta
Step 1: In the birth chart (D-1), look out for the Atmakaraka (AK). As mentioned before, Atmakaraka is the planet that attains maximum degrees in the birth chart.
Step 2: See which rashi (sign) is occupied by the Atmakaraka planet in Navamsa (D-9). The sign, in navamsa, which is occupied by Atmakaraka planet is called as Karakamsha.
Step 3: Note which plant/s occupy 12th house or sign from Karakamsha. Ishta Devta is to be ascertained by this planet / these planets. In case, 12th house or sign from Karakamsha is empty (means no planet occupies it), we have to see for its lordship to know the Ishta Devta. I am placing below a list of deities that correspond to various planets and can be used in deducing the form of Devta to be worshipped (in relevance to Ishta Devta, Dharma Devta, Kul Devta, Paalan Devta)
PlanetDeity
SunShiva, Rama
Moon Krishna, Gauri, Lalita, Saraswati
Mars Hanuman, Rudra, Kartikeya (Subrahmanya), Narasimha
MercuryVishnu, Narayana, Buddha
JupiterHayagreeva, Vishnu, Indra, Dattatreya, Any guru
Venus Lakshmi, Parvati
Saturn Vishnu, Brahma
Rahu Durga, Narasimha
Ketu Ganesha
It is said that among all the different deities, it is Vishnu, who is capable of bestowing moksha as he carries the sudarshana chakra and uses it specifically for that purpose.
The worship of an appropriate Vishnu Avatara as one’s Ishta Devata is generally recommended for attaining Moksha and reducing obstacles in life in general. The list of those various incarnations of Lord Vishnu and planets associated with them is given in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Chapter 2, verses 5-7), and is placed below for your convenience of understanding;
PlanetSri Vishnu Avatar
SunSri Rama
MoonSri Krishna
MarsSri Narasimha
MercurySri Buddha
JupiterSri Vamana
VenusSri Parashurama
SaturnSri Koorma
RahuSri Varaha
KetuSri Matsya
One should worship one’s Ishta Devta to attain final salvation. Worship of Ishta Devta is to be done daily, with appropriate mantras and allied rituals. The important thing is to be selfless while worshiping to the Ishta Devta. One should not ask for anything while worshiping, rather one should offer oneself completely in Ishta Devta’s holy feet. Jaimini Maharishi has also mentioned about planetary equivalents of various deities in his Upadesha Sutras (1.2.72–79). As per Jaimini Sutram, following is the association between planets and corresponding deities;
Sun (Surya) – Lord Shiva
Moon (Chandra) – Gouri
Venus (Shukra) – Lakshmi
Mars (Mangal) – Skanda (Kartikeya)
Mercury (Buddha) – Lord Vishnu
Saturn (Shani) – Lord Vishnu
Jupiter (Guru) – Samba Shiva
Rahu – Tamasi or Durga
Ketu – Lord Ganesha
Lets take examples and try to understand how to know one’s Ishta Devta.
Example1: ishtadevtaexample1
In this example, I have placed D-1 and D-9 side by side for easy reference. I am placing degrees of planets (as per D-1) below;
ishtadevtaexample2
We can see that Venus (Shukra) is the Atmakaraka (AK) planet here, attaining highest degrees (29 Cp 30′ 32.35”). If we see D-9, Venus is in Virgo, so Virgo is the Karakamsha sign. 12th house from Virgo is Leo and it is empty i.e. no planet resides in it. Next we would take lordship of Leo, so Ishta Devta for this person is deity form of Sun. It can be Lord Shiva or Lord Rama. One can worship whoever one gets naturally inclined towards.
Example 2:
ishtadevtaexample3
I have placed D-1 and D-9 charts side-by-side for easy reference. I am placing degrees of planets (as per D-1) below;
ishtadevtaexample4
As we can see here, Mars comes out to be the Atmakaraka (AK) planet with highest degrees in D-1.
In D-9, Mars is in Aquarius and 12th house from it is Capricorn, in which Jupiter resides. Hence deity corresponding to Jupiter would be this person’s Ishta Devta.
Hence the person’s Ishta Devta can be either of Hayagreeva, Vishnu, Indra, Dattatreya, Samba Shiva or Vamana Avatar of Vishnu.
To attain Moksha, it is essential to worship Ishta Devta by chanting the corresponding 12 lettered (dwadakshari) Mantra. About the mantras, I will write in next post.

importance of Muhurta

Vedic astrology (Jotish) is a part of Vedic knowledge that describes practical employment of Vedic philosophy.
The main subject that Jotish studies is Time as a manifestation of the Highest Will.
Muhurta is a selection of the best moment (the best date and time) for the commencement of any important action. It helps use the influence of planets and other astrological factors in favorable way to eliminate the adverse impact and make the result of the work the most rewarding. It helps counteract the obstacles in the natal chart and synchronize the actions of a person, the influence of astrological factors and the planned event.
The starting time ( birth, formation of a company, a wedding ceremony, moving to a new house, starting constructions, starting a new business, buying a vehicle, a new job, starting ventures, starting new investments, starting education, long journeys, surgeries, and so on) is the most important factor because it will form the future horoscope. The future of a man and an event depend on the time in which they were born. Even though we cannot control the time of our birth, it is in our power to start other matters and actions at the right time.
That is what the science of Muhurta is used for. If the start time is favorable, then the result of the action will be very effective and will coincide with the intention.
Muhurta also means a unit of time equal to two Ghati (48 minutes).

Below are some general recommendations on auspicious moments of time:
  1. Do not start important things on a Saturday or Tuesday. It is very inauspicious to get married, or start a new business on these days.
Saturday is the day of Saturn, the planet of delay, difficulties, and severe retribution of karma. This day is favorable for meditation, seclusion, or penance for spiritual purposes.
To win Saturn’s mercy one can practice Saturday fast and/or vow of silence (mauna). Fasting should be done consciously, taking in consideration one’s state of health. The conscious decision to sacrifice even a little supersedes the duration and severity of the fast. See also Ayurveda on Fasting.
Tuesday is the day of Mars, the planet of war, conflicts, quarrels, and decisive action. This time is good for playing sports, hard physical work, or starting a business that require competition and aggression.
  1. Full Moon is a good time for worldly affairs; however, one needs to be cautious. Statistically, a lot of crimes and traffic accidents occur at this time. The human mind becomes less stable, which results in aggravation of mental disorders. Complex surgeries should not be assigned to the full moon either.
The last day of the waning moon is the right time for enhanced meditation.
  2. Any creative action is best begun during the waxing Moon, while the waning Moon works best for cleansing and demolishing actions.
  3. The most favorable time to start important things during the day is Abhijit Muhurta. It is an astrological middle of the day, and is easy to calculate if we know the time of sunrise and sunset. Simply count the number of hours between sunrise and sunset and divide that number by two. The resulting amount added to the sunrise will be the start of Abhijit Muhurta.
  4. The most favorable time throughout the year is Akshay tritium. It happens once a year, when both the Sun and the Moon are in exaltation. Usually, it occurs in the middle of spring, when the Sun is in Aries and the Moon enters Taurus.
  5. long trip is best to start on Friday, while Monday is the perfect day for short trips.
  6. The most favorable time for spiritual practice is Brahma Muhurta, lasting about 48 minutes before sunrise. At this time, it is best to meditate, pray, or study the Holy Scriptures.
  7. Any eclipse is a very unfavorable time to start anything. At this time, it is best to retire and indulge in spiritual practices. Vedic astrology advises against watching the eclipse, sleeping, or being outside in the darkening rays of the Sun.
  8. Surya Sankranti is another unfavorable time, a period when the Sun transmigrates from one sign to another. It usually occurs in the middle of a month.
  9. For a wedding: Uttarayana (first half of the year, when the Sun moves its way north from Capricorn to Gemini) is best; Dakshinayana (second half of the year, when the Sun moves south through from Cancer to Capricorn) is not as good.
  10. Travel:
Do not travel:
To the East – on Monday and Saturday
West – on Sunday and Friday
South – on Thursday
North – on Wednesday and Tuesday
Very good to travel:
To the East – on Tuesday
West – on Wednesday and Thursday
North – on Friday and Sunday
South- on Saturday
Choosing an auspicious time is not a panacea for everything but only one factor. It is absolutely necessary that seeds are planted at the right time; it is not sufficient to produce a good harvest though. Other factors are also necessary: sufficient rain, cultivation, fertilization, soil type, etc. So, while choosing an auspicious time is a necessary condition it is not a sufficient clause to ensure success. Bhagavad Gita (Vedic Holy Scripture) says: “Success is determined by three things: concentration of mind, determined effort, and the will of God”. Therefore, out of three factors two are dependent on us, and one on God. Thus, choosing an auspicious time comes under “determined effort” and we then depend on God for the result.
TODAY’S TIP: If your life has become too heavy, the feeling of sadness and hopelessness become a common condition, you work a lot with no return; there is a chance that Saturn has begun to affect you. It would be very beneficial to apply the correction means to soften the influence of this planet. For example, assume some austerity on Saturdays (vow of silence, fasting, helping people in need, contribution of work, time or money etc.). Among the methods of correction, the Vedas mention also to bury iron, or feed black crows on Saturdays, as a sacrifice to Saturn.
What Saturn is really expecting from us is a deep personal transformation, internal changes, the development of such qualities as humility, diligence, laconism and brevity, seriousness, responsibility and austerity.
