This week's Full Moon is called Sharad Purnima (Tuesday night in USA), which is considered one of the strongest "most holy" Moons of the whole year. Sharad Purnima Moon has 16 kalas, signifying enormous amounts of divine nectar that one can access at this time. As a great example of the spiritual magnificence of this Moon, Lord Krishna, the perfect incarnation of God (Vishnu), embodies all the 16 kalas of Sharad Purnima. It is also important to know that it was on this Sharad Purnima night that Lord Krishna performed the dance of divine love (Maha Raas).
The cosmic soma emanating at Sharad Purnima is extremely potent for healing and nourishing of body-mind-spirit. Spiritual practices, Moon baths taken, and Moon water made at this time will be highly potent
It is traditional in some places in India to make kheer (rice pudding) to leave out under the Sharad Purnima Full Moon, which is then enjoyed as a healing, protective, and deeply nourishing food for the whole family the next morning. The Moon will move through the gandanta tithi from Revati into Ashwini nakshatra just before midnight on Tuesday night, and will remain in Ashwini until soon before midnight the next day.
This nakshtra is ruled by the Ashwin Kumaras, the horse-headed physicians of the gods, in Vedic lore, there is a potent healing energy here. Working with medicines or healing ceremonies around this full Moon can be especially potent.
A Full Moon represents culmination. It is like a cup overflowing. Although Full Moons are not good times to start new important endeavors, they are good for expressing and emphasizing the values they represent. In this full moon, the energy of Mars, exalted in the 10th house, suggests leadership and assertiveness in action, especially in career. Also, the placements of Venus, Mercury and Jupiter, relative to the Full Moon produce a nice Chandra Adhi Yoga, a combination that is also good for running a business, and making money. Adhi Yoga is also good for education and general good fortune. The full moon itself is a good time for enhancing these qualities, and the next two weeks, as the moon wanes, is a good time to bring plans and projects to a conclusion, or to refine or perfect plans or projects that have already been started. During the full moon itself, it is a good time to be active, assertive and productive, since the energy that is being expressed now will bring your actions towards success.
We, the Hindus (irregardless of education level) have a little to no interest in understanding how the Diwali (or any other Hindu festival) dates are calculated. Normally the folks in USA will call back home to find out the dates of important Hindu holidays, and then perpetuate the same dates to our friends and also on internet.
We assume that since the Sun rises first in India, so a festival would be first celebrated in India and then it will be followed in USA (just like New year celebration).
Unfortunately that is not the case for Hindu religious Holidays. Our Holidays are based on Tithi, and tithis are not based on sunrise/sunset (see at the bottom for the definition of tithi).
At any given point in time, Tithi is the same all over the globe. So you would need to convert the day/time to your location.
Diwali is celebrated on the night of Amavasya (a common knowledge). This year in India Amavasya starts at 10:28 PM on Nov 6th and ends at 9:32 PM on Nov 7th. So when this time is translated to USA, Amavasya starts at 11:58 AM on Nov 6th and ends at 11:01 AM on Nov 7th. Now, if you decide to do lakshmi pooja on Nov 7th evening, you will miss the night of Amavasya.
I have listed below the days of upcoming Hindu festivals for both India and USA.
You can also refer to Drik Pachang (link below) and set it to Randolph NJ location
Tithi: The moment of new Moon, or that point of time when the longitudes of Sun and Moon are equal is called ‘amavasya’. The tithi is the time taken by the Moon in increasing its distance from the Sun by 12 degrees. The complete revolution of the Moon (29.5 days) occupies 30 tithis for 360 degrees. Since the motions of the Sun and Moon are always varying in speed the length of a tithi constantly alters
In other words, a tithi ends at the same instant of time for all places on Earth and a tithi is not sensitive to the longitude (or latitude) of the region.
The moment of Sunrise of course varies with longitude and therefore local time of Moon’s entry into any tithi will differ at different places. For the same reason expunction and repetition of tithis may differ by a day in different longitudes.
Saturn myths are in many of the Puranas, prominently in Shiva & Skanda Puranas. Understanding his myths helps us.
To appreciate the quality of Saturn's influence.
Saturn is the envoy of the Gods whose main job is to ask people to account for their karma. Shani's influence comes through his position in the natal chart, the houses he aspects, the dashas & bhuktis and finally through his transits. Studying the myths in the Puranas shows that no one could avoid his influence whether it was gods, kings, demons or humans.
Below are some of the important myths of Saturn that help us in understanding his influence more:
Celebrating the fast of Saturn?
I am sharing a couple of these myths for all to read and understand Shani's great power.
Saturn's influence on Lord Shiva Saturn was a great devotee of Shiva yet they are two important myths that show his powerful influence on Lord Shiva. The first is connected to the sacrifice of his wife Sati & the second with the birth of his son, Ganesha.
The story of Sati's sacrifice
When Lord Shiva came under the influence of Saturn, he experienced the loss of Sati, the first incarnation of his wife. The story of Sati goes as follows:
Daksha, the son of Brahma, prayed to the Mother Goddess that she be born as his daughter. She agreed on the condition that he would never displease her. He agreed and she was born as Sati. When Sati matured she fell in love with Lord Shiva and married him against her father's wishes. Daksha disliked this alliance as he felt that the ascetic Shiva was not good enough for his daughter. Daksha expected Shiva to pay obeisance to him but Shiva refused to do so as he was the supreme god & most revered of all. According to Vedic tradition if Shiva were to venerate Daksha who was on a lower in stature to the great Shiva, the former would be cursed forever. Daksha's ego did not allow him to recognize the true Shiva. Lord Shiva refuses to pay respect to his Father-in ?law & thereby creating an ongoing feud which caused a lot of sorrow to his wife Sati.
Daksha decided to avenge this humiliation by organizing a yagya in Kankhal near Haridwar. He invited all Gods in heaven and prominent men on earth, with the exception of Shiva and Sati. When Sati heard that her father was holding a ceremony, she wanted to go despite not being invited. Shiva cautioned her that only misery would result of her going uninvited but she was adamant.
Sati demanded an explanation from Daksha as to why she and Shiva were not invited. Daksha said that Shiva, a person who dressed in rags who adorned himself with ashes, skulls and snakes and frequenter of graveyards had no place in this elite gathering. Unable to bear the insult Sati proclaimed that she is giving up her life and in front of an astounded audience she stepped into the sacrificial fire of the yagya.
When Shiva learnt of this, he was inconsolable and in his grief destroyed the yagya and all Daksha's army. Daksha's head was also cut. Then Shiva held aloft Sati's limp body and began the Dance of Destruction or Tandava Nritya. This is the dance that heralds the destruction of the universe.
Guests approached Vishnu who was also present at the ceremony. He realized that it was too late to reason with Shiva. He let loose his chakra or disc like weapon and cut up Sati's body into pieces. The various parts of her body got scattered all over India. Wherever a part of Sati's body fell people built a shrine to the Goddess Shakti, whose incarnation Sati was. Vishnu consoled Shiva and requested him to give back life to the dead. Shiva did so but insisted that Daksha had to be punished for his pride. He cut off a goat's head and attached it to Daksha's lifeless body before making him alive. To this day Daksha is depicted with a goat's head. The ceremony was then completed.
Shani was said to have create all this mayhem in order to punish Daksha for his pride and created inconsolable sorrow for Shiva. Shiva went to Mount Kailash and lived a life of a recluse and ascetic till Parvati the next incarnation of Sati came into the life and brought him out of the sorrow.
Lord Ganesha receives the elephant's head
Lord Shiva and his wife Goddess Parvati invited all the gods including the planetary gods to celebrate Lord Ganesha's birth. After his naming ceremony, the gods - Vishnu, Brahma, Indra, Agni, Varuna, Surya, Chandrama, Mangal, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra - took him in their lap, had a look at him, gave blessing and gifts.
The last was Shani Deva. He gave his blessings and gifts to the child like others but did not look at the child. His face was turned to the side.
Goddess Parvati said - "Shani Deva, You are dishonouring us by not looking at our child while giving your blessings."
Shani Dev said - "Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, You know when I look at somebody, it brings destruction. So I don't want to bring any calamity by casting my negative sight on baby Ganesha. "
But Goddess Parvati didn't agree that Shani's look was so negative. She insisted Shani Deva to see her child while blessing him. Shani Deva continued to protest but after a long debate and when Lord Shiva also asked, he finally said "Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, I am doing this on your request, so I will not be responsible for the consequences."
He turned to look at baby Ganesha; his head got separated from his body.
Goddess Parvati said - "Shani Deva, What did you do to my child? I asked you only to look at the child not to destroy him."
Shani apologized and said - "Lord Shiva, This is why I always keep my eyes down and never look directly at any body as I know whatever I glance at, I destroy. As you did not agree with me and insisted on me to see baby Ganesha, what can I do now?"
Now Goddess Parvati started crying. Lord Shiva was also upset.
He called his Ganas and sent them to find a newborn child whose mother was sleeping with her back to him; and cut the head of such a child as he felt that a mother who turns back to her children does not really care for them. The Ganas could not find such a child, all the mothers were sleeping close to their children. They found a female elephant sleeping with her back to her child. The Ganas immediately cut the child's head from his neck and brought it to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva immediately fixed it on baby Ganesha's body. The child got alive.
This is just one of the myths of how Ganesha got an elephant's head.
We have to understand this myth as an allegory. Shani's aspect cutting off Ganesha head shows his ability to remove the physical ego of an individual.
Also according to Jyotish Shani's aspect to 3rd , 7th and 10 th houses is more difficult than his placement. The houses Shani aspects, their significations tend to be destroyed or your relationship to them would be. E.g. if Shani aspects the 7 th house, there is going to be destruction of a relationship ? in form of divorce or long separation. It can also lead to unsteady marital relationships. Also Shani's aspects by transit must be considered. If Shani is in Virgo by transit, he will be aspect Scorpio, Pisces and Gemini- significations of these houses can be troubled for the duration of the transit.
Saturn is known as Shani in Sanskrit. Upaya means to make a strategy to defeat the enemy. In Jyotish we take the Upaya very seriously as it is the way to defeat the enemy of past life actions, of negative thoughts and blocks to your mind in order to open up a newer fresher world. This world where happiness is prominent, the mind is relaxed and we follow a path of truth.
As Saturn represent the karma we need to deal with and its effect by its natal position, Dashas and bhukti and transits is very strong. As we are born on earth, we have past life issues to reconcile and doing the remedies for Saturn helps us face the future lighter and with less inner turmoil. Each chart is individual and in some cases Saturn may be also the best planet for you so it may not be essential to do any remedies to the natal chart - but Saturn will still effect you by transits like Sade Sati, Ashtama Shani or others and you will need to do remedies for the challenging transits.
Saturn
Saturn is the great teacher of cosmic truths. It does that through restrictions, obstructions, frustrations, unhappiness, disillusionment's, setbacks and fear. There is a definite purpose of the saturnine restrictions. Through his relentless force, he forces the soul to recognise its inner truth that has become obscured by veils of matter. On the positive side, Saturn stands for achievement, the fruits of hard work, responsibility, democracy and we would not get very far without it.
In the Vedas, Saturn is the son of the Sun born of a liaison between the Sun and his shadow wife, Chayya. The relationship between the Sun and Saturn is a very difficult one.
Saturn casts a shadow over the solar radiance. Saturn is the planet of karmic retribution. It keeps an account of all the past acts and releases this Karma unexpectedly. Faced with such powerful karmic forces an individual has to dig deep into their inner resources. It causes immense misery and frustration. But once the individual starts of understand the forces of Saturn and moves towards learning from the lessons it is teaching. The person slowly starts towards the path towards self-realisation. Saturn strips the attachments to material life. It makes us look towards the true reason of our birth. These stripping of illusions or the sheaths that encase the soul bring about immense psychological transformation. Saturn has the slowest motion of all planets, so it has plenty of time to teach the lessons and change the course of your life. Its unrelenting progress through your chart by transit or during its dashas and bhuktis, brings up Karmic issues you have to deal with, things you cannot avoid, the unpleasant tasks you have to face.
Saturn is very democratic in nature. It teaches lessons to everyone whether it is a friend or an enemy in a particular chart. Shani is the one planet that benefits most from remedial measures. Therefore all of us would benefit from doing upaye for Saturn
The Upayas for Saturn

Honouring Shiva and Saturn
Lord Shiva is the primary deity for Saturn, and all upaya for Saturn are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Shani performed a long Tapas for Lord Shiva where he lived only on air. Pleased by this tapas, Lord Shiva made him the planet of Justice among the planets. His influence is said to be 7 times that of his father Surya.
Whenever Trayodashi tithi and Saturday come together, it is the best time to do most of the Upaya for Saturn incl pujas, yagya or feeding for Shani. Shani was a devotee of Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva knows how to control the effects of Shani. Also fasts for Saturn are begun in the special month of Shravana and dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Yagya - Offering
Yagya means offering, and life should be one long sacrifice to the higher energy. It is not sacrifice in the way the West may think, but more devoting your life towards a higher path and doing everything for the cause of it. This life does not expect rewards for actions done, but if rewards do come they are taken as a gift from God. This is the message of Bhagawad Geeta. It is a very high concept and those who can do their work without expectations find they get very high rewards , both material and spiritual.
There are two types of yagya. One is the offering made at temples or at home to the gods through fire rituals, the other is an inner yagya performed by an individual through meditation, chanting, japa, good dharmic acts, inner cleansing and learning to work selflessly for the good of the world.
The yagya is usually done by the priest through Agni, the fire god who is invoked to take the message from humans to the devas (gods). Part of this yagya, an elaborate fire ceremony, is done where different types of offerings are given to Agni, with the chanting of the Vedas accompanying the ceremony. Donations are given to the priest and other priests are fed along with the guests. This yagya helps dissolve negative energies that are blocking the path of the individual in the subtle realms. But in my view, just doing the yagya is not enough, one must consider the purification practice through the inner yagya which can take a long time and helps a lot. Some of the inner yagya practices are given in the remedies below.
Mantra, and Japa - Reciting Sacred Sounds
This is one of the most important element of the inner yagya. Mantras are sacred sounds or prayers that are addressed to a deity or planet, and repeating them continuously is japa. The sounds form an energy that burns away negativity from the subtle body.
Man also means the mind or thoughts and tra means to protect, so the mantra literally protects the mind through chanting sacred hymns.
Mantras did not originally have any meaning. They were single words like Om or Ram, Lam, Vam etc. The mantra has to reach the place to which it is directed. If you are praying to the deity, you focus the mantra towards that; if you are unhappy, you ask to be made happy while chanting; if you are creating light and purifying your Panchanga, you must focus specifically on that.
Mantras are powerful but everything depends on how you chant them; they are recited in different ways. Sometimes the vowels are stretched so they can reach where they are meant to go. Sometimes mantras have just one word or a series of words. The importance and power of the mantra lies in its vibration. The vibrations of the mantras reach different parts of the physical and subtle body and beyond. As thousands of mantras have been chanted since time immemorial, we also connect to this when we begin chanting.
Mantras repeated constantly become japa . Japa is used to cleanse the mental and higher planes. You can also do japa by writing the mantras down in a note book 108 or 1008 times. This becomes a meditative exercise.
Mantras are either effective or ineffective. Their weakness or strength depends on how they are chanted, pronounced and with what degree of faith. If done properly it is called a strong mantra. If not, then it is weak and may not be potent.
Usually a mantra is chanted either once, thrice, 28 times or 108 times. Once should be enough but if you decide you need to do more, you try for 108 times which is the ideal number. Sometimes people decide they are going to perform 10,008 or 100,008 mantras over a particular period in order to show their devotion to the deity. In my opinion, if you do it right with the correct attitude, the mantra will be effective performed just once daily, but it should be done regularly.
Japa can be done in greater numbers - 108 or 1008 daily. This is extremely helpful with any of the difficult Panchangas.
Om Tryambhakam yajamahe sugnadhim pushivardhan Urvarukamiva bandhanan mrityor moksheya mamratat Om
Powerful Shani Mnatra
Om shanno devirabhistaya aapo bhavantu peetaye,
Shan yora bhistravantu naha
We worship the three-eyed one (Shiva) who is fragrant and nourishes all beings. Just as a cucumber falls from its creeper and is detached from bondage, so Shiva will help us liberate the soul from death and find moksha (self-realisation) and amrita (the nectar of immortality).
This is also known as the moksha mantra and chanted by those who are seeking self- realisation and moksha. It is one of the best mantras for Panchanga shuddhi as it bestows long life, peace, wealth, prosperity, satisfaction and immortality. It helps those who are ill, or who suffer from fears, depression and worry.
This is one of the mantras constantly given by Parashara for remedial measures. Specially good for all Shani upaya.
How to plan the Mantras and Japa practice
You should set aside time daily to do your mantra practice. If you are doing yoga or meditation, these can be added to them. You should sit in a lotus or half lotus pose facing east in the morning or north in the evening. The early morning or evening is the best time for this. Doing the moksha mantra regularly is the best remedy.
Weekly, you should do a planned japa, using any of the mantras and repeating them at least 108 times. Make a commitment and stick to it. If you can commit to a daily japa, then do so. Otherwise weekly is good.
The main thing to remember is to do them with devotion with your mind involved in the practice. Focus on the clearing of your inner energy and slowly you will find that the blocks clear and the light becomes stronger.
Do remember that it takes time. Do not expect instant results.
Daan - Donation - Giving your time, support and money
Donation to the right causes is considered one of the most important remedial measures. You can donate your time and give support and money to worthy causes. Making the world a better place for others is an excellent way to cleanse your past karma and good remedy for Saturn. If you cannot afford to give financially, give time. Supporting the poor and giving towards education and knowledge are two very worthy causes. You must give often. Giving on your birthday, the monthly tithi day and at important festivals is a good time. But donation must be done regularly and should become part of your life. Also you cannot lead a negative life now and hope to absolve everything through donation.
Path of Yoga - Mental, physical and spiritual clearing
Following the eightfold path of yoga teaches all the tools required to cleanse and enlighten the soul. Some of the most important aspects of this path are speaking the truth, performing the right actions, doing meditation, mantras and japa, following the discipline of yoga asana, a proper diet, and a non- violent life dedicated to higher knowledge. This is a difficult path for most to follow but even to follow a part of it helps with Saturn issues.
Honouring the Gurus and Brahmins
Gurus (teachers of higher knowledge) and brahmins (priests) should be honoured and supported regularly by giving them time and money to help with their educational work. You must honour the teacher, even if you think teachers are less than perfect, as they represent your pathway to higher knowledge. If you honour the teacher who is teaching you at present, you will attract better and better teachers. It is the gurus who show the way to the light.
Brahmins are priests. By supporting your spiritual organisation and its priest, you are helping bring light into your life. Usually brahmins are fed by gifts given to them at each yagya. You can plan to give an annual gift to them when you visit your spiritual organisation.
Feeding the poor
This is one of the best remedies to do for Saturn. You should feed the poor through donating food on your birthday, on wedding anniversaries or other special occasions. You can donate to a food bank or do anna danam at the local temple. Anna danam is donating of food but is usually connected to feeding the devotees at the temple. Most temples have a regular programme for this.
Seva and karma yoga - Looking after people and voluntary service
Giving service to others is a great way of doing inner cleansing. It can be done as voluntary work for a charitable organization or personally by looking after the elderly, the poor; giving time to make the world a better place for those who are needy. Seva means giving service to your parents, gurus or elderly people during their time of need. It should be done as a regular practice. Karma yoga is voluntary work that makes life easier for al
Following the dharmic path
Doing the right thing, following a path of dharma, is an excellent way of ensuring that you are bathed in light. Not only does it take care of the past by purifying the negativity, it also makes certain that your future is radiant.

Mantras are impulses or rhythms of the consciousness. They create vibrations in the spirit. Their effects, influence, method and mode of working are all a mystery. In Sanskrit, it is said, Manana trayate iti mantra. The mantra is that which saves you from repetitiveness. A repetitive thought is a worry. Mantras help to free you from your worries.
Main Shani Mantra by Ved Vyas (Navagraha Stotram)

Shani Tantric Mantra
“Om Praam Preem Praom Saha Shanescharaya Namaha”
2.Worship the Kalabhairav form of Lord Shiva
Kalabhairav is the “Lord of Time”. “Udyamao Bhairavah” – Shiv Sutras. “Bhairava” means he who nourishes and who creates fullness. Bhairava fills up our incompleteness or lack. When we invest 100 percent of our energy in any action, there will be no regrets, and when there are no regrets there is no fear or anxiety. The mind is complete, awake and in the present moment. In this state of awakened consciousness, the mind turns inward, becomes peaceful and surrenders. The surrendered mind finds prosperity, strength, peace, cheerfulness and success!
3.Read the “The Greatness of Saturn”
The telling of mythic stories has always been a powerful form of therapy, bringing healing to people facing adversity. The Greatness of Saturn is such a therapeutic myth, told and retold over many centuries. Taken from the East Indian Vedic tradition, it honors the planet Saturn, who personifies time, limitations, loss, and all forms of adversity.
4.Worship the Peepal tree
Vedas call the peepal tree ‘Ashvatta’ – the shade that provides rest for the divine horse. In Tamil culture, it is called the ‘Arasa Maram’ – the king of trees. Bhagavad Gita calls the tree as the manifestation of Krishna. The ‘Atharvana Veda’ book number 5 calls the tree the amrita [elixir] of the world. Siddhartha Gautama [founder of Buddhism] meditated under the tree and became the Buddha. Thus, Buddhists call the tree Bodhi – the tree of enlightenment.
5.Walk barefoot on Grass on Saturdays
“Life does not always believe in strength. A weakness has beauty in it because it is tender and soft. A storm comes; big, strong trees will fall. Grass (small plants) will simply bend, and then the storm goes by, and they are again smiling and flowering. In fact, the storm has freshened them, it has taken their dust, that’s all. They are more alive, younger, fresher, and the storm has given them a good bath. And the old trees, very strong, have fallen because they resisted. They would not bend; they were very egoistic.”- Lao Tzu
One of the things that Saturn is trying to teach us is to be humble. Walk on the grass on his day (Saturday is ruled by Saturn) to invoke the blessings of Saturn.
6.Worship Lord Hanuman
When you pray to Hanuman with devotion and completely surrender to HIM, you imbibe his qualities. And those are the exact qualities that can help you with Saturn. It helps you with a positive Saturn energy.
7. Donation – Pay your karmic debts without expecting anything in return. Saturn is the lord of Karma. And by voluntarily and lovingly donating to those in need you can pay your karmic debts! Dānam (pronounced as Daanam), is the Sanskrit word for charity or donation.
Saturn shows us our reality, He creates difficulties in life for us to appreciate what we have HERE & NOW. So learn to be in the present moment to honor Saturn.Meditation helps you be in the present moment.
9.Listen to ‘Dasaratha Shani Stotram’
Saturn enters the star constellation of Rohini once in every 30 years. This is one of the most feared transit for kings and their kingdom as their country goes through a severe phase of poverty! It is said that during the reign of King Dasaratha when Saturn was about to enter Rohini Nakshatra, King Dasaratha worshiped Saturn and pleased him with his prayers. Saturn did not enter Rohini during the reign of King Dasharatha. Hence the Dasaratha Shani stotras are considered an excellent remedy for Saturn related troubles.
10.Simplify your life by removing clutter.
We fear Saturn because he removes things that are not needed for our growth. One of the simplest ways to please Saturn is to declutter and stay organized.
Remove clutter at home by discarding things that you no longer need. Remove clutter in your mind through silence and meditation. Remove clutter in your life by staying away from relationships that no longer serve your growth.
