Muhurta:
1) If possible go for surgery during shukla paksha (Waxing Moon) period.
2) Purnima (Full Moon) should be avoided as far as possible because bodily fluids are running highest on this day.
3) Moon should not be in the same sign as of birth at the time of surgery.
4) Tuesday and Saturday are good for Surgery.
5) Mars, the significator of surgeries, should be powerful.
6) 8th house should be unoccupied.
7) Ardra, Jyeshtha, Mula and Ashlesha Nakshatras are good for surgery and 4th, 9th and 14th Lunar days are good.
8) The house which rules over the part of the body to be operated on should be strong and should have benefic influences on it.
If these guidelines from our ancient scriptures are followed, the risk associated with surgery can be minimized to a great extent.
Note: It is important to listen to the attending doctor. If he/she feels that there is a risk in waiting for the appropriate muhurta then one should not wait. One should just remember God and go for it.
KUJĀṢṬAMA कुजाष्टम
Maṅgala should always be avoided in the Randhra Bhāva (8H), as it indicates destruction of the object in view. In a marriage chart, Maṅgala in the 8th should be outrightly rejected. Even if Maṅgala is otherwise powerful, he should not occupy the Randhra Bhāva. The 8th house is the house of longevity, of which Śani is Kāraka. Śani is a Manda Graha (slow), and the slower one inhales or exhales Prāṇa, one lives longer.
Maṅgala is of Agnitattva, and it invigorates Prāṇa, and make it flow abruptly and swiftly, thus decreasing the longevity. In Marriage Muhūrta, the 8th is the Māṅgalya sthāna (auspicious place), as it governs the length of married life. Presence of Maṅgala here is highly detrimental, as he causes one form of Kujadoṣa. In any Muhūrta, the Mokṣa Trikoṇa, 4/8/12 should not be occupied by a Graha. If a Graha in these Bhāvas can’t be avoided, then at least they should not be Krūragrahas. If having a Krūragrahas in these Bhāvas can’t be avoided, then at least Maṅgala, Sūrya, Ketu or Candra in the 8th should be avoided under all circumstances, unless the performer of the Muhūrta Karma is hell-bent on achieving failure.
The Kujāṣṭama is so bad, that even 3 Śubhagrahas, Bṛhaspati, Śukra and Budha in the Lagna, all placed powerfully, and the Maṅgala being Ucca in the 8th (Mithuna Lagna), can’t counter this blemish. According to Nārada Purāṇa 56.446, “the great blemish Kujāṣṭama occurs when Maṅgala occupies the eighth house from the Lagna. Reject the Lagna even if it is occupied by three Śubhagrahas, and even though Maṅgala is Ucca.” Notice that Maharṣi Nārada calls this as a great blemish, or a Mahādoṣa, which means, this must be avoided under all circumstances.
